The "Zero pressure" mindset

Before you begin, take a breath. Every dog learns at a different pace. Celebrate the tiny wins like a glance toward the bed without guilt, shame, or pressure. We want the bed to represent calm security, not forced compliance. Puppies have naturally shorter attention spans so this is a skill you will continue to train as they grow and mature and it will become an ingrained behaviour. This will be a life saver when you have visitors or if you work from home. Teaching disengagement gives you - the owner, breathing space. You do not want to raise a dog who thinks it is ok to climb all over every person in the house.

🔹 Phase 1: Building Bed Value

The goal of this phase is to turn the bed into a magnetic "High-Value Zone." We want your dog to actively want to be there because it pays beautifully.

Step 1: Establish the High-value zone

Stand near your dog's bed with a handful of high-value treats (poultry, fish, or their favorite tasty bites).
Shape the behaviour: Every time your dog steps onto the bed, immediately reward them on the bed.
Encourage them to "shoot back" to it by tossing a treat a few feet away, waiting for them to finish it, and rewarding heavily the moment they return to the bed.
The Golden Rule: The bed is where the best things happen.

🔹 Phase 2: Mastering high arousal

Once your dog loves their bed and actively seeks it out, it is time to introduce real-world elements. We want the bed's value to outweigh environmental activity.

Step 2: Introduce Low-level distractions

With your dog settling on the bed, introduce a mild environmental change.
Example: Pick up a broom, take a step toward the front door, or drop a piece of food into a nearby bowl to simulate a visitor arriving.
If your dog stays on the bed, reward them immediately.
Troubleshooting: If they leave the bed to investigate, do not scold them. Simply increase the value and frequency of the rewards on the bed to ensure it remains the best choice in the room.

Step 3: Compete with High-value toys

Now, test the boundary with a higher-arousal trigger, like a favorite tug toy or a moving object.
Show the toy at a distance or initiate a brief moment of play, then pause and see if your dog can actively disengage from the high-arousal toy and choose the comfort of the bed instead.
Reward the exact moment of disengagement—when they turn away from the excitement and choose the bed.

🔹 Phase 3: Total control & agency

Step 4: Use a clear release word

Your dog should only leave the bed when you give them permission. This prevents them from constantly "breaking" position the second your back is turned.
Use a clear, distinct release cue like "Break" or "Get it" to let them know they are free to leave the high-value zone.
This builds absolute clarity and predictability, which naturally lowers a high-arousal dog's anxiety.
